Technology in the Elementary Classroom

As times change it becomes more apparent that teachers must change as well. One of the biggest changes that teachers are learning to deal with is the need to include technology in the K-12 classroom. For many this is a natural change, but for others this is something that causes much anguish. Teachers must figure out how to incorporate lessons via technology in the classroom. The importance of using technology in the classroom cannot be left out of the curriculum, especially in the state of Texas in which the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) deems certain technology concepts to be included in the classroom.

The value of facilitating instruction with technology is an important and necessary aspect of the elementary classroom. According to the U.S. Department of Education, “when technology is used as a tool to support students in performing authentic tasks, the students are in the position of defining their goals, making design decisions, and evaluating their progress” (n.d.). Using technology in the classroom also improves motivation and self-esteem amongst students as they feel important to be using the same tools that professionals use. Levels of collaboration between peers also increase. Teachers often find that their students are willing to help their classmates more often when using technology.

As technology begins to encompass our society, it is imperative that educators learn about and understand the importance of facilitating instruction in the classroom with technology. Teachers and students cannot afford to miss out on becoming more familiar and comfortable with this aspect of today’s world. With all of the great resources available to educators, there is no reason that using technology in the classroom is not feasible.
